Salisbury Steak with Onion Gravy Recipe

Ingredients

For the Steak:

  • 1 pound ground beef
  • ⅓ cup bread crumbs
  • 2 teaspoons ketchup
  • 1 teaspoon mustard
  • 1 teaspoon Worcestershire sauce
  • ½ teaspoon garlic powder
  • ½ teaspoon onion powder (optional if not using onions in the gravy)

For the Gravy:

  • 1 small onion
  • 1 teaspoon oil
  • 2 cups beef broth
  • 4 tablespoons flour
  • 1 teaspoon ketchup
  • ½ teaspoon Worcestershire sauce

Instructions

Prepare the Onions (Optional):

  1. Thinly slice a small onion.
  2. Cook the slices in a pan with 1 teaspoon of oil over medium-high heat until they are nicely browned, approximately 7-8 minutes.
  3. Set the caramelized onions aside in a bowl.

Prepare the Steak Patties:

  1. In a mixing bowl, combine 1 pound of ground beef with ⅓ cup bread crumbs, 2 teaspoons ketchup, 1 teaspoon mustard, 1 teaspoon Worcestershire sauce, and ½ teaspoon garlic powder.
  2. If not using caramelized onions, add ½ teaspoon onion powder.
  3. Divide the mixture into 3-4 equal portions. Make a small indent in the center of each patty to prevent puffing during cooking.

Cook the Patties:

  1. Heat a large frying pan with 1 teaspoon of oil over medium-high heat.
  2. Cook the patties, flipping every 5-6 minutes, until they reach an internal temperature of 165°F. This should take about 15-20 minutes, depending on the thickness of the patties and your stove.

Make the Gravy:

  1. Whisk together 4 tablespoons of flour with 1 cup of beef broth.
  2. Once the patties are cooked, remove them from the pan and set them aside, lightly covered with foil.
  3. Pour out most of the liquid from the pan, leaving about 3-4 tablespoons behind.
  4. Allow the pan to cool slightly before adding 1 cup of beef broth. Bring the mixture to a light boil over medium heat.
  5. Slowly add the flour-broth mixture while continuously whisking to prevent lumps.
  6. Stir in 1 teaspoon ketchup and ½ teaspoon Worcestershire sauce. Add salt to taste.
  7. Continue whisking until the gravy thickens, which should take a few minutes.
  8. If using, add the caramelized onions to the gravy and mix well.

Combine and Serve:

  1. Return the cooked patties to the pan with the gravy and let them simmer for a few minutes.
  2. Serve the Salisbury steak with mashed potatoes or your preferred side dish.

Enjoy your delicious homemade Salisbury steak with rich onion gravy!
