Recipe: Christmas Baklava with Walnuts
Ingredients:
- 1/2 pound chopped pecans
- 1/2 pound chopped walnuts
- 2-3 tbsp. ground cinnamon
- 1 pound package of Phyllo dough
- 1-1/2 cups butter, melted
- 2-1/2 cups honey
- 1 tsp. vanilla extract
- 1 tsp. grated lemon zest
Instructions:
- In a large bowl, mix together chopped pecans, walnuts, and ground cinnamon. Set aside.
- Preheat oven to 350°F (175°C). Butter a 9×13 inch baking dish.
- Layer two sheets of Phyllo dough in the bottom of the prepared dish. Brush generously with melted butter.
- Sprinkle 2-3 tablespoons of the nut mixture evenly over the buttered dough. Repeat layers of Phyllo and nuts until all ingredients are used, ending with about 6 layers of Phyllo on top. Brush any remaining butter over the top layer.
- Using a sharp knife, cut through all layers of the baklava to create squares or diamonds.
- Bake in the preheated oven for about 45 minutes, or until golden brown and crisp.
- While the baklava is baking, heat honey in a saucepan until it is close to boiling. Stir in vanilla extract and grated lemon zest.
- When baklava is done baking, immediately pour the hot honey mixture over the top, ensuring it covers evenly.
- Allow the baklava to cool completely in the pan to absorb the flavors.
