Cheesy Stuffed Meatball Subs are a delicious comfort food experience featuring juicy meatballs with a melted mozzarella center, smothered in marinara sauce and served in soft hoagie rolls. This easy-to-make recipe is perfect for family dinners or game day gatherings.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 1 lb ground beef
  • 1/2 lb ground pork
  • 1 cup breadcrumbs (preferably Italian-seasoned)
  • 1/4 cup grated Parmesan cheese
  • 1/4 cup fresh parsley, chopped
  • 1 large egg
  • 3 cloves garlic, minced
  • 1 tsp onion powder
  • 1 tsp dried oregano
  • 1 tsp salt
  • 1/2 tsp black pepper
  • 1 cup mozzarella cheese, cut into small cubes (for stuffing)
  • 4 hoagie rolls
  • 1 jar (24 oz) marinara sauce
  • 1 cup shredded mozzarella cheese (for topping)
  • Fresh basil leaves (for garnish)
  • Olive oil (for drizzling)

Instructions

  1. Preheat your oven to 400°F (200°C).
  2. In a large mixing bowl, combine the ground beef, ground pork, breadcrumbs, Parmesan cheese, parsley, egg, garlic, onion powder, oregano, salt, and black pepper. Mix well until all ingredients are evenly incorporated.
  3. Take a small portion of the meat mixture (about 2 tablespoons) and flatten it in your hand. Place a cube of mozzarella cheese in the center and fold the meat around it, rolling into a ball. Repeat this process until all the meat mixture and cheese are used up.
  4. Place the stuffed meatballs on a parchment-lined baking sheet. Drizzle a little olive oil over the top of each meatball to help them brown.
  5. Bake in the preheated oven for 20-25 minutes or until the meatballs are browned and cooked through (internal temperature should reach 160°F).
  6. While the meatballs are baking, heat the marinara sauce in a small saucepan over medium heat until warmed through.
  7. Once the meatballs are ready, slice the hoagie rolls down the center without cutting all the way through.
  8. Place 3-4 meatballs inside each roll, spooning the marinara sauce over them.
  9. Sprinkle the shredded mozzarella cheese over the meatballs in each sub.
  10. Place the assembled subs on a baking sheet and return to the oven for an additional 5-10 minutes, or until the cheese is melted and bubbly.
  11. Remove from the oven, garnish with fresh basil leaves, drizzle with olive oil, and serve hot.

Notes

  • For a softer sub, you can gently hollow out the insides of the rolls a bit to create more room for the filling.
  • To make your subs healthier, consider using lean ground turkey or chicken instead of beef.
  • Whole-grain hoagie rolls can also provide additional fiber.
  • A medium-bodied red wine, such as Chianti or Merlot, pairs beautifully with the rich meat and cheese.
  • A lager or pale ale can cut through the richness of the subs.
  • Sparkling water with a splash of lemon or a homemade lemonade can provide a refreshing contrast without the alcohol.
