Irresistible Chinese Chicken on a Stick is a flavorful and quick dish marinated in a savory blend of soy sauce, honey, and sesame oil, perfect for weeknight dinners or gatherings. This recipe is also gluten-free friendly.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 1 lb Chicken Breast or Tenders (boneless thighs for juicier results)
  • 2 tbsp Sesame Oil
  • 1/4 cup Soy Sauce (use tamari for gluten-free)
  • 2 tbsp Honey (maple syrup for vegan option)
  • 2 tbsp Rice Wine Vinegar (apple cider vinegar can substitute)
  • 1 tbsp Granulated Garlic (fresh minced garlic can substitute)
  • 1 tbsp Ginger Powder (use half the amount of fresh ginger)
  • 1 tsp White Pepper (black pepper is a good alternative)
  • 2 stalks Sliced Green Onions (for garnish)

Instructions

  1. Cut chicken breast or tenders into ½ inch cubes. Place in a bowl or zip-top bag.
  2. In a separate bowl, whisk together sesame oil, soy sauce, honey, rice wine vinegar, granulated garlic, ginger powder, and white pepper.
  3. Pour the marinade over the chicken, ensuring all pieces are coated. Cover and refrigerate for 1 to 2 hours.
  4. While the chicken marinates, soak wooden skewers in water for 10 to 15 minutes to prevent burning.
  5. Thread the marinated chicken onto the soaked skewers, leaving some space between pieces for even cooking.
  6. Preheat your grill to medium-high heat (around 400°F or 200°C). Clean and lightly oil the grill grates.
  7. Place the assembled skewers on the hot grill. Cook for 7 to 8 minutes on one side.
  8. Flip the skewers and continue grilling for another 7 to 8 minutes, or until the chicken is golden and reaches an internal temperature of 165°F (74°C).
  9. Remove the chicken skewers from the grill. Garnish with sliced green onions or sesame seeds. Serve hot.

Notes

  • Marinating the chicken for 1-2 hours enhances flavor.
  • Soaking skewers prevents them from burning on the grill.
  • Monitor grill temperature closely for even cooking.
  • Use a meat thermometer to ensure chicken reaches 165°F (74°C).
  • Feel free to add vegetables like bell peppers, onions, or zucchini to the skewers.
  • For gluten-free, use tamari or coconut aminos instead of soy sauce.
  • For a vegan option, substitute honey with agave syrup.
  • Chicken thighs can be used for a juicier bite.
