Classic Bread Recipe
Ingredients:
- 500g plain flour (4 cups)
- 250 ml milk
- 1 tsp salt
- 7g yeast (2 and 1/4 tsp)
- 1 egg
- 50g butter
- 3 tbsp sugar
Method:
- Prepare Milk and Butter Mixture: In a saucepan, combine the milk and butter. Warm the mixture on the stove until the butter melts, but ensure the milk does not boil.
- Combine Dry Ingredients: Sift the flour and salt into a large mixing bowl. Create a well in the center.
- Add Wet Ingredients: In the well, add the yeast and egg. Sprinkle the sugar over the flour.
- Incorporate Milk Mixture: Pour the warmed milk and butter mixture into the well. Mix thoroughly until a cohesive dough forms. The dough should not be runny.
- Knead the Dough: Transfer the dough to a lightly floured surface and knead until smooth and elastic. Place the dough in a lightly oiled bowl, covering it with a damp dish towel or plastic wrap.
- First Rise: Allow the dough to rise in a warm place until it has doubled in size.
- Shape the Dough: Punch down the dough to release the air. Divide it into smaller pieces and shape each piece into a ball. Arrange the dough balls on a baking tray, ensuring they are evenly spaced. Cover the tray with a damp cloth or plastic wrap.
- Second Rise: Let the dough balls rise again until doubled in size.
- Bake: Preheat your oven to 180°C (350°F). Once the dough has risen, bake for 25 minutes or until the bread is golden brown and sounds hollow when tapped on the bottom.
Glaze:
Mix 2 tablespoons of sugar with 1 tablespoon of water. Microwave for 20 seconds, then brush the glaze over the warm bread for a shiny finish.
Enjoy your homemade bread!
