Creamy French Onion Chicken is a comforting dish featuring tender chicken and rice baked in a rich French onion soup sauce, topped with crispy French fried onions and melted Gruyere cheese.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 1 1/2 cups uncooked white rice
  • 1 can (10.5 oz) of French onion soup
  • 1 1/2 cans of water (use the empty soup can to measure)
  • 1/4 cup of butter, cut into small pieces
  • 1 lb. chicken breast, cubed and boneless
  • 1 1/2 cups of Gruyere cheese, shredded
  • 1 packet (1 oz) of dry onion soup mix
  • 1 cup crispy French fried onions

Instructions

  1. Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C). Spread the uncooked white rice evenly across the bottom of a 13×9-inch baking dish.
  2. In the baking dish, combine the uncooked rice, cubed chicken breast, and the can of French onion soup. Pour in the water, using the empty soup can for easy measuring. Stir everything together well to ensure even mixing.
  3. Sprinkle the dry onion soup mix evenly over the mixture.
  4. Cover the dish tightly with foil, then sprinkle the shredded Gruyere cheese over the mixture.
  5. Bake for about 1 hour and 15 minutes, or until the rice has absorbed all the liquid and the chicken is fully cooked and tender.
  6. Remove the foil and scatter the crispy French fried onions over the top.
  7. Return the dish to the oven for another 5 minutes, until the onions are golden and crunchy.

Notes

  • Ensure the chicken is fully cooked before serving.
  • You can adjust the amount of Gruyere cheese according to your preference for cheesiness.
  • Leftovers can be stored in the refrigerator for up to 3 days.
