Fail-Proof Egg Custard
Fail-Proof Egg Custard
Ingredients:
- 5 eggs
- ½ cup sugar
- 1 1/2 teaspoons vanilla extract
- ½ teaspoon salt
- 4 cups 2% or whole milk
- Nutmeg for topping
Instructions:
- Preparation: Preheat oven to 350°F (175°C) and lightly grease an 8×8 baking dish.
- Mixing the Custard: In a large bowl, whisk together eggs, sugar, vanilla extract, and salt until well combined.
- Heating the Milk: In a small saucepan, heat the milk over medium heat until it reaches about 180°F (just before it simmers; do not boil).
- Combining Ingredients: Gradually pour the hot milk into the egg mixture, whisking constantly until fully incorporated. Whisk vigorously for an additional minute to ensure smoothness.
- Baking:
- Pour the custard mixture into the prepared baking dish. Sprinkle the top with nutmeg if desired.
- Place the baking dish into a larger pan and fill the larger pan with water until it reaches about 1 inch deep around the custard dish (this creates a water bath).
- Carefully transfer to the preheated oven. Bake for 45-50 minutes, or until a knife inserted near the center comes out clean. The custard should still jiggle slightly in the center.
- Avoid overbaking to prevent curdling.
- Serving:
- Serve the custard warm or chilled. Optionally, top with whipped cream, fresh fruit, or additional spices to taste.
- Any leftovers can be refrigerated for later enjoyment.
- Enjoy: Indulge in this timeless, comforting dessert reminiscent of Grandma’s homemade goodness!
