How to Bake Perfect Scones Easily

Ingredients:

  • 3 ¼ cups plain flour
  • 1 cup unsalted butter (very cold)
  • 1 cup buttermilk (very cold)
  • 2 tsp baking powder
  • ¼ tsp bicarbonate of soda
  • 1 tsp salt
  • 3 tsp granulated sugar

Instructions:

  1. In a mixing bowl, combine the flour, salt, sugar, baking powder, and bicarbonate of soda with a fork.
  2. Grate the cold butter into the dry ingredient mixture using a kitchen grater. Mix with a fork until the mixture resembles breadcrumbs.
  3. Place the bowl in the refrigerator for about 15 minutes.
  4. Remove the bowl from the refrigerator and gradually add the very cold buttermilk, mixing continuously with a fork.
  5. Lightly flour your work surface and transfer the dough onto it. The dough will not be fully combined at this point; do not add extra buttermilk.
  6. Use your hands to gently mix the dough until it comes together and forms a rectangle.
  7. Cut the rectangle in half with a dough cutter, stack one half on top of the other, and roll it out into a 1 cm thick rectangle using a rolling pin.
  8. Cut the dough into your desired shapes with a biscuit cutter.
  9. Brush the scones with milk and bake in a preheated oven at 180°C (350°F) for 20 to 25 minutes.
