Monterey Sausage Pie Recipe

Ingredients

  • 1 pound bulk sausage
  • 1 cup shredded Monterey Jack cheese
  • 1 cup shredded sharp cheddar cheese
  • 1/2 cup finely chopped onion
  • 1/2 cup finely chopped green bell pepper (optional)
  • 4 large eggs
  • 2/3 cup milk
  • 1/2 cup all-purpose flour
  • 1/2 teaspoon baking powder
  • 1/2 teaspoon black pepper
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt
  • Green onions or chives for garnish (optional)

Instructions

  1. Preheat the Oven: Begin by preheating your oven to 375°F (190°C).
  2. Cook the Sausage: In a large skillet over medium heat, brown the bulk sausage until fully cooked. Drain any excess fat.
  3. Sauté the Vegetables: Add the finely chopped onion and optional bell pepper to the skillet. Sauté until softened, approximately 3-5 minutes.
  4. Mix the Cheese: In a large mixing bowl, combine the cooked sausage and sautéed vegetables with the Monterey Jack and sharp cheddar cheese. Set aside.
  5. Prepare the Custard: In a separate bowl, whisk together the eggs, milk, flour, baking powder, black pepper, and salt until the mixture is smooth.
  6. Combine the Mixtures: Pour the egg mixture over the sausage and cheese mixture, stirring until well incorporated.
  7. Pour into Baking Dish: Grease a 9-inch pie dish or baking pan and pour the combined mixture evenly into it.
  8. Bake: Place the dish in the preheated oven and bake for 30-35 minutes, or until the pie is set and the top is golden brown.
  9. Garnish and Serve: Allow the pie to cool slightly before slicing. Optionally, garnish with chopped green onions or chives. Serve warm.
