Salwaa’s Vetkoek Recipe
Salwaa’s Cape Malay Cooking: From My Kitchen to Yours – Preserving Our Heritage Since 2011!
Yield: 20 Vetkoeks
Ingredients:
- 4 cups cake flour
- ¼ cup oil
- ¼ teaspoon salt
- 1 dessert spoon sugar
- 1 packet instant yeast
- Approximately 200ml lukewarm water (adjust as needed)
- Oil for frying
Method:
- In a large mixing bowl, combine the flour, salt, sugar, and yeast.
- Create a well in the center of the dry ingredients and add the oil and lukewarm water.
- Mix the ingredients to form a soft dough.
- Knead the dough for 5-10 minutes until smooth and elastic.
- Cover the bowl with cling wrap and set aside in a warm place until the dough doubles in size.
- Once risen, punch down the dough and shape it into small balls.
- Heat the oil in a deep saucepan over moderate to high heat.
- Fry the dough balls until golden brown, ensuring they cook through evenly.
- Drain the fried vetkoeks on absorbent paper.
- Serve with mince curry, dhal, or any preferred accompaniment.
Note: For a smaller batch, halve the recipe. Enjoy your delicious, homemade vetkoeks!
