Simple Pastry Recipe with Minimal Ingredients
Ingredients:
- 1.5 cups water (300 ml)
- 1 egg
- 1 teaspoon salt
- 4 cups flour
For Greasing:
- 200 g butter or margarine
For the Filling:
- 100 g feta cheese
For Topping:
- 1 egg yolk
Directions:
-
Prepare the Dough:
In a large bowl, mix water and egg thoroughly. Gradually add salt and flour, stirring until a soft dough forms that doesn’t stick to your hands.
-
Rest the Dough:
Divide the dough into 4 equal portions, shape them into balls, cover, and let rest for 10 minutes.
-
Roll and Layer:
Roll out each ball of dough into a 40 cm square. Spread softened butter over the entire surface of the first sheet of dough. Stack the next sheet on top and repeat, until all 4 sheets are stacked with butter on top of each.
-
Shape the Pastry:
Stretch the layered dough from the edges to form a square shape. Fold it in half, then apply more butter. Fold in half again, butter, and fold once more into a square. Cover and refrigerate for 1 hour.
-
Prepare for Baking:
Preheat oven to 180°C (350°F). Roll out the chilled dough on a lightly floured surface into a square shape using a rolling pin.
-
Assemble and Bake:
Cut the dough in half, then slice each half into 7 strips, making a total of 14 strips. Make cuts on the ends of each strip. Place a portion of feta cheese at the end of each strip without cuts, then fold the pastry over to enclose the filling. Arrange the prepared pastries on a baking tray lined with parchment paper. Brush the tops with beaten egg yolk.
-
Bake Until Golden:
Bake in the preheated oven for about 20-25 minutes, or until the pastries are golden brown.
-
Serve:
Remove from oven and let cool slightly before serving. Enjoy your homemade pastries!
