This Timeless Classic Apple Pie Delight is a beloved dessert, perfect for any gathering. It features a flaky crust and a luscious apple filling made with a mix of Granny Smith and Honeycrisp apples. This recipe guides you through creating an authentic apple pie from scratch, ensuring a perfect result every time.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 2 ½ cups all-purpose flour
  • 1 cup unsalted butter, chilled and cubed
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • 1 tablespoon granulated sugar
  • 6 to 8 tablespoons ice water
  • 6 to 8 medium apples (Granny Smith, Honeycrisp, or a mix), peeled, cored, and sliced
  • ¾ cup granulated sugar (adjust based on apple tartness)
  • 1 teaspoon cinnamon
  • ¼ teaspoon nutmeg
  • 2 tablespoons lemon juice
  • 2 tablespoons all-purpose flour (for the filling)
  • 1 tablespoon butter, cut into small pieces
  • 1 egg, beaten (for egg wash)
  • 1 tablespoon coarse sugar (for sprinkling on top)

Instructions

  1. In a large mixing bowl, combine the flour, salt, and sugar. Add the cubed butter and mix using a pastry cutter or your fingers until the mixture resembles coarse crumbs. Gradually add ice water, one tablespoon at a time, mixing just until the dough comes together. Divide the dough into two disks, wrap in plastic wrap, and refrigerate for at least 1 hour.
  2. In a separate bowl, toss the sliced apples with granulated sugar, cinnamon, nutmeg, lemon juice, and the additional flour. Allow the mixture to sit for about 15 minutes to draw out the juices.
  3. Preheat your oven to 425°F (220°C).
  4. On a floured surface, roll out one disk of dough to fit your pie pan. Place it in the pan and trim any excess dough hanging over the edges.
  5. Pour the apple filling into the prepared pie crust, and dot with small pieces of butter. Roll out the second disk of dough and cover the apples. Trim to fit and crimp the edges to seal. Cut a few slits in the top crust to allow steam to escape.
  6. Brush the top crust with beaten egg and sprinkle with coarse sugar for a beautiful finish.
  7. Place the pie on a baking sheet (to catch any drips) and bake in the preheated oven for 15 minutes. Reduce the oven temperature to 350°F (175°C) and continue baking for an additional 35-45 minutes, or until the apples are soft and the crust is golden brown.
  8. Once baked, remove the pie from the oven and let it cool on a wire rack for at least 2 hours before slicing. Serve warm or at room temperature, optionally with a scoop of vanilla ice cream.

Notes

  • For a truly timeless apple pie, use a blend of tart and sweet apples like Granny Smith and Honeycrisp for the best flavor and texture balance.
  • Chilling the pie dough for at least an hour is crucial for a flaky crust. Do not skip this step.
  • You can prepare the pie crust ahead of time and store it in the refrigerator for up to 2 days or freeze it for longer.
  • To prevent the edges of the pie from browning too quickly, you can cover them with aluminum foil during the last part of baking.
  • Allowing the apple pie to cool completely before slicing helps the filling set, ensuring clean slices.
