Vetkoek (Magwinya) Recipe

Ingredients:

  • 4 cups cake flour
  • 4 tablespoons sugar
  • A pinch of salt
  • 4 tablespoons powdered milk (optional)
  • 10g packet of yeast
  • 2 cups warm water
  • 1 tablespoon oil

Instructions:

  1. Combine Dry Ingredients: In a large mixing bowl, combine the cake flour, sugar, salt, powdered milk (if using), and yeast.
  2. Add Water and Knead: Gradually add the warm water to the dry mixture, kneading continuously until the dough is soft and elastic.
  3. Let the Dough Rise: Transfer the dough to a bowl, cover it with a plastic bag or cloth, and leave it in a warm place for about an hour to rise.
  4. Prepare for Frying: Heat cooking oil in a deep pot until it’s hot enough for frying.
  5. Fry the Dough: Shape the dough into balls and carefully place them in the hot oil. Fry until one side is golden brown, then turn them over to cook the other side.
  6. Serve and Enjoy: Once both sides are golden brown, remove the vetkoek from the oil, drain any excess oil, and serve.
