- 2 large onions (preferably sweet onions)
- 1 cup all-purpose flour
- 1 teaspoon baking powder
- 1 teaspoon salt
- 1 teaspoon paprika (optional)
- 1/2 teaspoon black pepper
- 1 cup buttermilk (or milk with a tablespoon of vinegar)
- 1 cup breadcrumbs (panko or regular)
- Vegetable oil, for frying
- Peel and slice the onions into 1/4-inch thick rings. Separate the rings and set them aside.
- In a bowl, mix together the flour, baking powder, salt, paprika, and black pepper.
- In another bowl, pour the buttermilk.
- Dip each onion ring first into the flour mixture, coating well. Shake off any excess.
- Next, dip the coated onion rings into the buttermilk, ensuring they are well coated.
- After buttermilk, dredge the onion rings again in the flour mixture, then coat with breadcrumbs, pressing gently to adhere.
- In a deep skillet or fryer, heat about 2 inches of vegetable oil to 350°F (175°C).
- Carefully add the breaded onion rings to the hot oil in batches. Fry until they are golden brown, about 2-3 minutes per side.
- Use a slotted spoon to remove the onion rings and place them on a paper towel-lined plate to drain excess oil.
- Enjoy your crispy onion rings while they are still hot!
Notes
- For best results, use sweet onions.
- Adjust seasoning to taste.
