Elegant Poached Pears in Red Wine: An Incredible Recipe for 5-Star Desserts

Ingredients

Scale
  • 4 ripe pears (such as Bosc or Anjou)
  • 2 cups red wine (Merlot or Cabernet Sauvignon works great)
  • 1 cup granulated sugar
  • 1 cinnamon stick
  • 2 star anise pods
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • 1 tablespoon lemon juice
  • Zest of 1 orange
  • Pinch of salt

Instructions

  1. Peel the pears, leaving the stems intact. Cut a small slice off the bottom of each pear to help them stand upright.
  2. In a saucepan, combine the red wine, sugar, cinnamon stick, star anise, vanilla extract, lemon juice, orange zest, and salt. Stir well to dissolve the sugar.
  3. Bring the mixture to a gentle simmer over medium heat.
  4. Carefully add the pears to the saucepan, ensuring they are submerged in the liquid.
  5. Simmer the pears for about 20-30 minutes, turning them occasionally, until they are tender but not mushy.
  6. Once the pears are cooked, remove them from the poaching liquid and place them on a serving dish. Let them cool slightly.
  7. Increase the heat and let the poaching liquid simmer until it reduces by half and thickens into a syrup.
  8. Drizzle the syrup over the pears before serving.
