  • 2 tablespoons olive oil
  • 1 small onion, diced
  • 2 cloves garlic, minced
  • 1 can (15 oz) crushed tomatoes
  • 1 can (6 oz) tomato paste
  • 1 tablespoon sugar
  • 1 teaspoon dried oregano
  • 1 teaspoon dried basil
  • Salt and pepper, to taste
  • Grated Parmesan cheese, for serving
  • Fresh basil leaves, for garnish (optional)

Instructions

  1. Cook the Spaghetti: In a large pot, bring salted water to a boil. Add the spaghetti and cook according to package instructions until al dente. Drain and set aside.
  2. Heat the Oil: In a large skillet, heat the olive oil over medium heat.
  3. Sauté the Onion: Add the diced onion to the skillet and sauté for about 3-4 minutes until it becomes translucent.
  4. Add the minced garlic and cook for an additional 30 seconds, being careful not to burn it.
  5. Pour in the crushed tomatoes and tomato paste. Stir well to combine.
  6. Add sugar, oregano, basil, salt, and pepper. Stir to incorporate all the flavors.
  7. Let the sauce simmer for about 10 minutes, stirring occasionally.
  8. Add the cooked spaghetti to the skillet with the sauce. Toss to coat the pasta evenly in the sauce.
  9. Remove from heat and let sit for a minute. Serve hot, topped with grated Parmesan cheese and fresh basil if desired.
